Orlen Poppenhager

Orlen L. Poppenhager, 90, of Astoria died at 8:22 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

He was born Feb. 15, 1911, in Astoria, a son of Carl and Grace Litchfield Poppenhager. He married Vilda R. Gilson on June 20, 1934, in Palmyra, Mo. She died Sept. 1, 1976.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Max; one great-grandson; and one brother.

Surviving are six daughters, Linda (and Richard) Easley of Astoria, Carol (and Harry) Davis of East Galesburg, Rosemary (and Mario) Leto of Woodridge, Barbara (and Ed) Willey of Macomb, Nancy (and Ray) Pressler of Springfield and Patsy (and Michael) Miller of Pittsfield; three sons, Phillip (and Marlena) and Steve (and Carla), both of Astoria, and Jeff (and Cindy) of Albion; one brother, John (and Lucille) of Astoria; 22 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was manager of Bader and Co. in Astoria for 33 years. He also had been director of Astoria Building and Loan for many years.

He was a former member of Astoria Board of Education and was a former trustee and secretary of Astoria Fire Protection District.

He was a member of Vermont Masonic Lodge 116 for 55 years; ANSAR Shrine Temple, Valley of Springfield; and Ipava Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 226.

He also was a member of Astoria United Methodist Church, where services were held on Sunday with Rev. Marian Stone officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
