Fenton Gilson, Former Astoria Resident, Dies

Fenton Dyre Gilson, 80, former resident of the Astoria area, died late Thursday evening in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Orlan Poppenhager. He had been ill one week.

Previous to his illness, he had resided in Peoria for the past six months with his daughter, Mrs. Howard Ward.

Mr. Gilson was born Jan. 13, 1880 in Fulton county, the son of Alex Freeman and Eva Babcock Gilson. He was married to Sally Scrogum on Dec. 25, 1901. She died in 1910. On Feb. 6, 1915, he married Edna Beadles, who survives, in Galesburg.

Also surviving are 11 children: Mrs. Roy McMullen, Summum; Harold Gilson, Wyoming State; Vilda Poppenhager, Astoria; Eldon Gilson, Clio, Mich.; Eugene Gilson, Gerald Gilson, Mrs. Hayden Sundberg, and Mrs. Robert Toland, all of Galesburg; Mrs. Floyd Abel, of Knoxville; Mrs. Howard Ward, Peoria, and Jerry Gilson, of Bader.

34 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Fay Gilson of Astoria and Earl Smith of Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. Edna Vaughn of Lincoln and Mrs. Charles Webb of Lewistown, also survive. Two children and four brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Astoria Christian church with Rev. Forrest Wise officiating. Burial was in the South Fulton cemetery.
