John CurlessJohn F. Curless, 88, of Astoria died at 10:19 a.m. March 31, 2010, at his home.

He was born Aug. 15, 1921, in Astoria, a son of Hugh and Susie Farwell Curless. He married Patsy R. Shores on Dec. 3, 1949, in Havana. She preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 1995.

He also was preceded in death by one grandson, Seth Ray Welker; three sisters, Nora Curless, Nellie Ruth and Opal Schisler; and three brothers, William, Hartford and Ted Curless.

Surviving are three daughters, Pam (and L.A.) Watkins of Kingsport, Tenn., Cheryl (and Evan) Welker of Mount Carmel and Penny Curless of Astoria; four sisters, Edith Lee, Olive Howe, Doris Robertson and Myrna Phillips; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was in World War II Army Air Corps, serving from 1942 to 1946 with the 3705 AAF Base Unit as a Cpl.

He was a lifetime farmer.

He was a member of Astoria American Legion Post #25.

Services were held Saturday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Wayne Curless and Gary Sheets officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery in Astoria with military rites provided by Astoria American Legion.

Memorials may be made to Mount Zion Cemetery or American Red Cross.
