Gilbert Hickle

Gilbert L. Hickle, 91, of Astoria died at 2:05 p.m. Dec. 21, 2018, at his home.

He was born Sept. 24, 1927, in Vermont, a son of Theodore Roosevelt and Lucille Brown Hickle. He married Ruby A. Bowman on Feb. 2, 1947, in Peoria Heights. She preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 2017.

He also was preceded in death by one son, Michael Hickle; two grandsons, Jamie and Shawn Hickle; one great-granddaughter, Liberty Ann Hickle; four brothers, Stanley, James, Richard and Steven Hickle; and two sisters, Peggy Holmes and Laura Hickle.

Surviving are two sons, James (and Kathy) Hickle of Astoria and David (and Kim) Hickle of Bushnell; two daughters, Mary (and Herb) Dilts of Marietta and Shelley (and Bob) Haare of Astoria; one sister, Mary Ellen Farwell of Astoria; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was a coal miner in the early 1960s working for AMAX Coal Company at Sunspot Mine. When the mine closed, Gilbert and Ruby opened The Old Orchard Store in Vermont.

He was a member of Vermont United Methodist Church where he served on the church board. He also served on the Vermont Town Board for several years.

Services were held Thursday at his church with Pastor Bennett Woods officiating. Burial was in Vermont Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
