Lela Chockley

Lela ChockleyLela G. Chockley, 93, of Rushville, formerly of Vermont and Galesburg, died at 3:15 a.m. Aug. 3, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Fulton County, a daughter of William and Mamie Ring VanFossen. She married Joe D. Chockley on Feb. 25, 1935, in Rushville. He preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1997.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Joe W. Chockley; four brothers, Dale, Clyde, Earl and Paul VanFossen; and one sister, Mary Johnson.

Surviving are one son, Marvin (and Gayla) Chockley of Lewistown; two daughters, Lois (and Lou) Culver of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Marjorie Chockley of St. Louis; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was a homemaker. She first worked at Miller’s Grocery in Vermont. She later worked as a waitress in Farmington and at a bakery in Galesburg.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Vermont, and a member of the Rebekahs for over 50 years.

Services were held Saturday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Reverend Mike Hall officiating. Burial was in Vermont Cemetery.
