Virgil StambaughVirgil L. Stambaugh, 73, of Astoria died at 5:12 p.m. May 10, 2016, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born May 20, 1942, in Astoria, a son of Wilson and Fern Hopping Stambaugh. He married Opalene Trone on May 29, 1963, in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jody (and Kevin) Kolves of Astoria and Jenny (and Mark) Hendricks of Rushville; two sons, Todd (and Kathy) Stambaugh and Tim (and Shannon) Stambaugh, both of Astoria; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Stanley Stambaugh; and one sister, Arletta Bollinger.

He was a lifetime farmer. He also was an independent truck driver and then drove for L&N Industries. He was a truck driver for over 34 years.

He was an Army veteran.

In his youth, he attended Nazarene Church in Astoria and was currently attending Astoria Christian Church.

He was a member of the Astoria American Legion Post #25.

Services were held Saturday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Matthew Thiner officiating. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery in Astoria with military rites by the Astoria American Legion Post #25.
