Roy Markley

Roy K. Markley, 101, of Peoria, formerly of Vermont, died at 12:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center of East Peoria.

He was born June 11, 1903, in Kerton Township, Astoria, a son of Sylvester and Rebecca McKinley Markley. He married Mabel M. Long on Feb. 26, 1925, in Lewistown. She died Feb. 29, 1992.

He also was preceded in death by one grandson; two brothers, DeLoss and Edwin Markley; and three sisters, Laura McLain, Ethel Moore and Mary Myer.

Surviving are one daughter, Betty Roeder of Peoria; one son, Donald (and Phyllis) of Peoria; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Strmac of Peoria.

He worked at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria for 20 years, farmed southeast of Ipava, and owned and operated Markley Grocery Store in Vermont and Ipava for more than 20 years, retiring in the early 1970s.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava with Rev. Leonard Leslie officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. tonight at the memorial home. Burial will be in Ipava Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to any charity.
