Franklin G. “Bud” Hughes, 76, of Farmington, died at 6:50 p.m. Monday, March 4, 1996, at the Graham Hospital Extended Care Unit in Canton.

He was born June 2, 1919, at rural Astoria, the son of Frank and Alys A. Lannery Hughes. He married Vivian Beadles on Feb. 3, 1945 at Temple, Texas. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Sandra Wright of Sycamore, and Mrs. Mark “Patty” Dillefield of Canton; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Ruth Stremmel of Astoria, Mrs. Emery “Lois” Edwards of Canton, Mrs. Virgil “Geraldine” France of Industry, Mrs. Betty Clagett and Mrs. Frank “Norma” Powell, both of Aurora, Mo., and Mrs. Sam “Wynette” Johnson of Canton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

He retired from the Midland Coal Co. in 1983 where he last worked as a “drag line operator.” He had been employed as coal miner for 37 years at various coal companies. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Local #6756. He served with the Army’s 633rd Tank Destroyer Battalion in Europe during WWII. He was a member of Lewistown VFW Post 5001. He was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed carpentry work and had also worked as a carpenter. He was known for both the quality of his work and the pride he placed in doing his work.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Henry Memorial Home in Lewistown with Rev. George Mercer officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Lewistown with military services conducted by the Lewistown VFW and American Legion Posts.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Trinity Lutheran Church at Canton or to the First Baptist Church at Sycamore, Ill.
