Sam Johnson, 80, of Canton died at 10:21 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Graham Hospital.

He was born Jan. 19, 1923, in Canton, a son of Frank F. and Edith Garland Johnson. He married Wynette J. Hughes on Dec. 18, 1948, in Canton. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Debra (and Richard) Booth of Wee-Ma-Tuk and Jennifer (and Larry) Grove of Fiatt; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

He was a World War II Navy Air Corps veteran.

A member of Telephone Pioneers of America, he worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Canton, where he served as a deacon, elder, youth fellowship leader and Sunday school teacher.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with Revs. Steve Knudson and Robert Holler officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. tonight. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to his church or the American Cancer Society.
