Betty CasselBetty J. Cassel, 88, of Carmel, Ind., formerly of Astoria, died June 3, 2014, at Sunrise on Old Meridian in Carmel.

She was born Elizabeth Barrett on June 27, 1925, a daughter of John and Edith (Coleman) Barrett. She married William “Bill” Cassel on Nov. 27, 1948, in Havana. He preceded her in death on Nov. 30, 2013.

She also was preceded in death by one grandson, Robbie Cassel; two sisters, Mary Wickwire and Margaret Campbell; and two brothers, Paul and Robert Barrett.

Surviving are two sons, Bob (and Nancy) Cassel of Tinley Park and Jim (and Debbie) Cassel of Carmel; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She grew up on the family farm east of Ipava. She preferred homework to chores on the farm and had hoped to attend college after graduating from Ipava High School in 1943. Lacking the financial resources for college, however, she worked as a bookkeeper at Camp Ellis for the U.S. Army and in other bookkeeping positions in Peoria and Chicago.

Bill and Betty ran a grocery business in Astoria, in partnership with Bill’s brother Chuck and Chuck’s wife Pauline. She worked in the home, did the bookkeeping for the grocery business and made potato salad and chicken salad for sale at the store.

A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lewistown with Father Anthony Bernas officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
