William "Bill" CasselWilliam H. “Bill” Cassel, 90, of Carmel, Ind., formerly of Astoria, died at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 30, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel.

He was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Astoria, a son of Ray Hamm and Leta Jerene Anderson Cassel. He married Betty J. Barrett on Nov. 27, 1948, in Havana. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Bob (and Nancy) Cassel of Tinley Park and Jim (and Debbie) Cassel of Carmel; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Robbie Cassel; two sisters, Mary Sue Cassel and Lois Ann Moffitt; and three brothers, Robert, Jim and Charles “Chuck” Cassel.

He and his brother, Chuck, were owners and operators of Chuck and Bill’s Grocery in Astoria for many years.

He was Corporal in the U.S. Army, serving in the 309th Field Artillery during World War II. His division was one of the first across the Rhine River.

Services were held Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery with full military rites provided by Astoria American Legion Post #25.
