John Barrett

John E. Barrett, 96, of Astoria, formerly of Ipava, died at 4:10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 1996, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born Oct. 19, 1909, in Canton, a son of Thomas L. and Julia McNally Barrett. He married Edith M. Coleman on Jan. 6, 1921, in Lewistown. She died Oct. 15, 1970. One daughter Margaret Campbell; two brothers and four sisters also preceded him in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Wickwire of Peoria and Mrs. Bill (Betty) Cassel of Astoria; two sons, Robert Barrett of Galesburg and Paul Barrett of Astoria; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He farmed in the Ipava area all his life. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lewistown.

Funeral services were held Monday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava with Rev. Robert W. O’Conner officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown.

Memorials may be made to his church or to Astoria Township Cemetery in memory of Margaret Campbell.
