Ernest Briney, 98, of Hanna City, formerly of Adair, died at 6:30 a.m. June 16, 2008, at Bel-Wood Nursing Home in Bellvue.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1909, in Sheldons Grove, a son of Edward and Mary Lauderback Briney. He married Dorothy R. Stump on Sept. 13, 1949, in Carthage. She died June 28, 1997.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Eldon, Earl and Otis Briney; and one sister, Eva Hamm.

Surviving are one son, Bruce (and Zoe) Mix of Hanna City; one brother, Oliver (and Garnet) Briney of Morton; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was a United States Army veteran during World War II.

He was road commissioner for many years in Adair.

He was a member of Table Grove American Legion Post #413.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sheldons Grove Cemetery in Astoria with Pastor Jim Comstock officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation. Military rites will be conducted by Astoria American Legion Post #16. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
