Oliver BrineyOliver Edward Briney, 93, of Morton died at 7:30 a.m. June 17, 2013, at UnityPoint Health at Methodist in Peoria.

He was born March 2, 1920, in Crook, Colo., a son of Edward John and Mary Louderback Briney. He married Garnet Nadine Bates on Aug. 21, 1937, in Burlington, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Aug. 12, 2008.

He also was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol (and Don) Wickman of Eustis, Fla., and Judith Briney of Madisonville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving with the 104th Infantry Division in the European Theater. He held the rank of T5 and was a member of a team who laid and maintained communication systems.

Briney worked most of his life in construction around Peoria. For several years he owned and operated Oliver Briney Construction Co. in Peoria. He later worked for Becker Bros. Construction in Peoria as a construction superintendent, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5921 in Morton and Carpenters Local Union 183 in East Peoria.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton with Pastor Brett Bedwell officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Roberts Cemetery in Morton, where full military rites will be conducted by Military Funeral Honors and Tazewell Military Rites Team.
