Oldest Resident Of Astoria Dies

Mary WickertMrs. Mary Wickert, 98, owner and operator of the Wickert’s Shelter Care Home, died at 1:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, in her home at Astoria. She had been in ill health about a year.

Mrs. Wickert was a member of the Astoria Church of the Brethren and the WCTU. Born in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, Aug. 30, 1868, she was a daughter of Cyrus and Barbara (Dohner) Bucher. On Dec. 26, 1886, she was married to Martin Wickert, who died July 29, 1924.

Surviving are five daughters, Miss Elizabeth Wickert, Mrs. Ida Chockley, Miss Ruth Wickert, Miss Perlena Wickert and Mrs. Florine Sanders, all of Astoria; three sons, Samuel Wickert, Dixon; Reuben D. Wickert, Vermont; and Wilbur Wickert, Pekin.

Other survivors are 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, three half sisters, Mrs. Anna Blickenstaff, Mrs. Fannie Stambaugh and Mrs. Lizzie Lam, all of Astoria and a half brother, Ezra Bucher, Phoenix, Ariz.

Three sons, a daughter, sister and several half brothers and half sisters died earlier.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Astoria Church of the Brethren conducted by the Rev. Elmer Dadisman, pastor. Entombment was in the Astoria Memorial Mausoleum.
