Eldon Strode

Eldon H. Strode, 84, a former area resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at his home in Wickenburg, Ariz.

He was born July 21, 1917, in Fulton County, a son of Marvin and Delma Strode. He married Dorla Woodruff on June 14, 1942, in Palmyra, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Richard (and Lisa) Strode of Phoenix and Dale Eldon Strode, of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Dixie McClenahan (and Bill Beerman) of Glenwood Springs; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma Worsdell of Louisiana, Mo., and Wandalee (and Willard) Shields of Vermont; and three brothers, Donald (and Mary) Strode of Dunlap, Bernard (and Janis) Strode of Mexico, Mo., and Max (and Shirley) Strode of Bradford.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Dayton Strode, and one sister, Ilene Purdy.

He grew up on a farm near Vermont and graduated from Vermont High School in 1935.

He and his wife moved to Colorado in February 1945 where he worked on a ranch near Silt.

In the spring of 1952, the family moved to Glenwood Springs. For years, he was a rancher and a farmer on the Rose Ranch near Glenwood Springs.

In 1968, he joined Morrison-Knudson Co., handling freight operations for the Mid-Continent Resources coal mines near Redstone, Colo.

He was an avid sports fan and served for many years as a volunteer and board member for the youth baseball program in Glenwood Springs. For more than 20 years, he was a member of the chain crew for the Glenwood Springs High School football team.

He was active in the Colorado Cattlemen's Association and the Holy Cross Cattlemen's Association.

A celebration of the life of Eldon Strode was held Monday at the clubhouse at WestPark in Wickenburg, where he was active in community affairs.
