Hildreth PowellHildreth A. Powell, 85, of Astoria died at 1:08 a.m. Aug. 10, 2006, at Astoria Gardens & Rehab Center.

She was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Astoria, a daughter of James M. and Mabel L. Foster Derry. She married Charles C. "Pete" Powell on Aug. 28, 1937, in Wapello, Iowa. He died Feb. 19, 1983.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Robert; two brothers, Herschel and Herman Derry; and one sister, Hazel Mitchell.

Surviving are one sister, Helen Snowden of Astoria; five grandchildren, Sara (and Todd) Watson of Browning and Preston Pete Powell of Columbia, Mo., whom she raised; Cindy (and Stanford) Boxx of Steelville, Mo., Lisa (and Eric) Westhues of Columbia, Mo.; and Robert (and Doris) Powell of Columbia, Mo.; nine great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She farmed in the Avon and Astoria area, and worked at several restaurants in Astoria for several years, including The Dairy Dipper for seven years and at The Pottery in Abingdon for one year.

She was a 50-year member of Harmony Rebekah Lodge #53 of Vermont and Astoria United Methodist Church.

Services were held Sunday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Phil Derry officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Astoria Rescue Squad or American Cancer Society.
