BERTHA M. (HENDEE) MALOTT

Bertha Malott

Bertha M. Malott, 90, of Spoon River Towers in Lewistown, a former Vermont resident, died at 6:28 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 1996, at the Snyder-Vaughn Haven Nursing Home in Rushville.

She was born on Sept. 19, 1906, in Isabel Township, Fulton County, a daughter of John H. and Anna E. Tharp Hendee. She married Hiram R. Malott in Havana on Dec. 11, 1922.* He died March 1, 1989. She was also preceded in death by two infant sons and one sister.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. William (Ruby) Gobel of Mesa, Ariz., Mrs. George (Margie) Wilson of Vermont and Mrs. Doris Welch-Case of Peoria; three sons, Harold E. Malott of Astoria, Clyde A. Malott and John I. Malott, both of Lewistown; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Burdridge and and Lillie Coppenbarger, both of Easton.

She was a member of Jehovah’s Witness congregation in Lewistown.

Funeral services were held this morning at the Kost Memorial Home in Vermont. Burial was in the Vermont Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Snyder-Vaughn Haven Nursing Home.

* Laura’s note: As originally published in the Argus, Bertha’s marriage date was listed as 1992. I believe that was a typo, since Hiram died in 1989. The 1930 census records that she was 16 at the “age of her first marriage,” so that puts her marriage date as 1922, which makes much more sense. I have adjusted the date here to reflect this, but wished to note the discrepancy.
