Carolyn AndersonCarolyn Derry Anderson, 80, died May 13, 2016, at her home in Manassas, Va., after a long illness.

She was born Nov. 29, 1935, a daughter of Willis and Doris Welker Derry of Astoria.

Surviving are three daughters, Mindy Whitley and Cherill Anderson, both of Manassas, Va., and Tracy (and Dave) Hughes of Kennebunkport, Maine; four sisters, Joan (and Phil) Little of Marion, Barbara (and Ray) Hamm of Ipava, Marilee (and Gary) Griffin of Aurora, Ohio, and Donna (and Wayne) Layne of Peoria; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She had a long and distinguished civil service career working for the U.S. Air Force. She raised her family for four years abroad in Italy, and returned to spend the majority of her years working at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. She rose to a supervisory level as a security clearance adjudicator.

After her retirement in 1993, she became an active volunteer in her community, serving on the board of directors of her condominium association and working in the association office. She was an accomplished seamstress.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be conducted at her home in Manassas at a date yet to be determined.

Fall will bring Carolyn’s ashes home to Summum where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved father.
