Ernest ShanksErnest D. Shanks, 88, of Astoria died at 8:50 a.m. May 5, 2021, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born Oct. 13, 1932, in Macomb, the son of Ivan Ocie and Olive Mae Frazee Shanks. He married Jeannine Powell on Feb. 4, 1951, in Brooklyn. She survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Vicky (and Dean) Conway and Roberta (and Chris) McCormick, both of Astoria, Phyllis (and Rick) Batterton of Ipava and Anni (and Bill Burnham) Mitchell of Canton; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Duane Kenneth Shanks; and one granddaughter, Bambi Shanks.

He was a welder at International Harvester for 17 years. He also was a timber buyer for Pekin Hardwoods and owner and operator of Evergreen Hygro Systems in Astoria. Ernest and Jeannine were camp managers at Camp Emmanuel from 1975-84.

He was a member of Woodland Church of the Brethren.

Services were held Tuesday at Blackburn Cemetery in Brooklyn with Jim Grossnickle-Batterton officiating. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
