Services for Bambi S. Shanks, 16, of Vermont, who was pronounced dead at 10:46 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 1995, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Vermont United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jill Johnson-Scott will officiate.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kost Memorial Home. Burial will be in Vermont Cemetery.
She was killed in a two-vehicle crash involving an alleged drunken driver on a rural McDonough County road, police said.
She was born Dec. 27, 1978, in Macomb, a daughter of Duane and Nancy Herink Shanks.
Surviving are her father of rural Vermont; her mother of Bader; two sisters, Billie Jo Burnett of Rushville and Jamie Shanks of Astoria; one brother, Brandon of Vermont; grandparents, Arthur and Wilma Herink of Vermont, and Ernest and Jeannine Shanks of Astoria; great-grandparents, Everett McWhorter of Canton and Ivan Shanks of Astoria; and a niece, Brianne Brockley.
She was entering her junior year at VIT High School, where she was a member of the science club, played basketball, was a cheerleader, and a member of the flag squad.
She was a recipient of the U.S. Achievement Academy National English Merit Award. She was nominated to be a national scholar at the National Young Leaders Conference to be held in Washington, D.C.
She worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken in Macomb.
She was a member of Vermont United Methodist Church where she taught Bible School.
