VeteranHarold Spencer Sr.

Harold H. Spencer Sr., 93, of Astoria died at 11:47 p.m. Jan. 8, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Virginia, Ill., a son of Earl and Nettie Smith Spencer. He married Margaret Smith on March 24, 1946, in Yorktown, Va. She survives.

Also surviving are six sons, Rev. Harold H. (and Alice) Spencer Jr. of Luray, Va., Robert (and Peggy) Spencer, Ronnie Spencer, John (and Tammy) Spencer, all of Astoria, Gailen (and Rhonda) Spencer of Ipava and David (and Brenda) Spencer of Vermont; one daughter, Christine (and Moe) Sisson of Canton; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Ernest, Russell and Wilmer; and five infant sisters.

He farmed and worked at Fiat-Allis in Springfield, and PAG Seed Company, Skiles Fertilizer and Astoria Fibra Steel, all in Astoria.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1941-46 as a Gunners Mate 2C.

He was a member of Astoria American Legion Post 25 and Summum Christian Church.

Services were held Monday at Summum Christian Church with Pastor Ken Peterson and Pastor Gary Sheets officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery with full military rites provided by Astoria American Legion.
