Wendell SurrattWendell Everett Surratt, 83, of Rushville died at 6:20 a.m. Feb. 24, 2012, at his home.

He was born Oct. 3, 1928, in Chambersburg, the son of Everett and Ressie Roate Surratt. He married Clara Koop on Jan. 23, 1953, in Ackley, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 1999. He later married Rosemary Gibbons Runkle on Sept. 30, 2000, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Allen "Wayne" Surratt of Jacksonville; one daughter, Brenda Arlene Neese of Virginia; two stepsons, Bobby Lee Runkle of Litchfield, Kan., and Andy Leroy Runkle of Rushville; two sisters, Selma Kathleen (and Ray) Dockum of Grand Island, Neb., and Lorinda Faye (and Art) Brewer of Chattanooga, Tenn.; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Virginia Leach, Patsy Dodds, Gwen Hullinger and Fern Tarr.

He was in the Army from 1953-55, the Army Reserves from 1955-61 and the Navy from 1961-63.

He worked for Oscar Meyer and Excel Corp. in Beardstown, before retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Rushville Church of the Nazarene, Iowa Falls Masonic Lodge #192 AF and AM and Schuyler American Legion Post #4.

Services were held Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Fred Fritz officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery with military rites conducted by a U.S. Navy Honors Detail and Schuyler American Legion Post #4.
