VeteranRobert Sheckler Of Topeka Dies

Robert W. Sheckler, 74, of rural Topeka, Ill., died at 2:20 p.m., Sept. 14, 1989, at Mason District Hospital in Havana.

He was born Oct. 9, 1914, in Ellisville to Rowena Lydia Sheckler. He married Wilma D. Snyder on Aug. 30, 1969. She died July 6, 1976.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. John (Betty) Spates of Rushville and Mrs. Jack (Mary) Hamm of Astoria; and one sister-in-law, May Cook, who cared for him in his home.

He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 382 in Delavan. He was life member of Post 6408 VFW and a charter member of Amvets Post 136, both in Havana. He was a member of the Chautauqua Goofy Ridge Sportsmen’s Club, the Peoria Sportsmen’s Club at Spring Lake and the Illinois Sheriff’s Association. He was a retired coal miner.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 18 at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana with Rev. Pat Cox officiating and burial was in the Presbyterian Cemetery near Topeka.
