Auston Jack Hamm, 86, of Astoria died at 2:25 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Astoria Gardens & Rehab Center.

He was born March 13, 1918, in Hickory Township, Schuyler County, the son of Auston B. and Bessie Jane Rose Hamm. He married Mary Josephine Markley on Sept. 26, 1943, in Reno, Nev. She died Dec. 31, 1992.

Surviving are one daughter, Julia (and Angelo) Vallejo of St. Charles; one son, Nick (and Linda) of Astoria; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

A World War II Army veteran, he served as a corporal in the Pacific Theater.

He worked in construction for Frank Beck Jr. before serving in the Army. Later, he helped build the power plant in Havana and was a rural mail carrier for 30 years. He served on the Astoria School Board and the Fulton County Board.

He was a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Association and Vermont Lodge 116, AF&AM.

He was a member of Astoria United Methodist Church, where he was Sunday School superintendent for years.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at his church with Rev. Marian Stone officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. tonight at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to his church.
