Julia Vallejo

Julia VallejoJulia Lee Hamm Vallejo, 70, of St. Charles, died June 8, 2015, in Geneva.

She was born Dec. 20, 1944, in Canton, the daughter of Auston Jack and Mary Josephine Markley Hamm. She grew up on the family farm in Astoria.

Surviving are her husband, Angelo Vallejo; one daughter, Alicia Lee (and Guillermo) Heredia; and three grandchildren, Julianna, Isabella and Jeremiah.

She attended Western Illinois University obtaining a BS in education in 1966, and a MS in education in 1969. At Northern Illinois University, she received her Certificate of Advanced Study/Type 75 Certificate in 1975.

She taught in Lewistown, and in 1970 moved to the Fox Valley area.

In Aurora East School District #131, she taught at Brady Elementary School, served as principal at Allen School and spent several years as director of Pupil Personnel Services in the Central Administration Office.

In 1993, she left to join the Kane County Educational Service Region serving as the first female assistant regional superintendent until 2007. She then continued as a consultant to the Regional Office of Education until 2013.

As assistant regional superintendent, she took pride in forming the Kane County Special Education Consortium. She brought together the nine school districts to discuss and coordinate special education services.

She enjoyed coordinating and supervising the Kane County Educator of the Year Awards Banquet. She read and reviewed all of the nomination books submitted and then individualized remarks for each honoree.

She also supervised the educational program at the Kane County Youth Home taking pride to ensure “her kids” received an equal educational opportunity.

She was part of a small group who initiated the Kane County/Aurora University educational partnership. This program facilitated Kane County educators in obtaining graduate level degrees to further their education.

As an adjunct professor for Aurora University, she taught School Community Relations. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and served one term as President of the Northern Illinois University chapter.
