Opal Phillips

Opal M. McCormick Phillips, 80, of Marietta died at 9:20 a.m. Jan. 3, 2009, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Vermont, a daughter of Ralph and Fern Derry McCormick. She married Russell L. Phillips on Nov. 24, 1951, in Quincy. He preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 2000.

She also was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Barry Van Pelt; five brothers; and two sisters.

Surviving are one son, John H. Phillips of Prairie City; two daughters, Marjorie (and Terry) Warner of Galesburg and Molly Van Pelt of Aurora; two brothers, Dorvan (and Verna) McCormick of Astoria and Charles McCormick of Green Rock; five sisters, Margaret Hopping of Industry, Josephine James of Macomb, Virginia McCombs of Astoria, Berniece Sharpe of Cuba and Shirley (and Jim) DiCroce of Arvada, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Thursday at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home in Bushnell with Pastor Robbie Johnson officiating. Burial was in Vermont Cemetery.
