She was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Eldorado Township, McDonough County, a daughter of Dwight and Mary Short Johnson. She married John Wade Nelson on Jan. 5, 1947, in Macomb. He preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 2010.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Kent Nelson; and one sister, Marva Wherley.
Surviving are one son, Edward Nelson of Glasford; one daughter, Maryann (and Bill) Swain of Reidsville, Ga.; one brother, Larry (and Janet) Johnson of Pekin; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood for over 50 years. She won many bake-off championships at the Illinois State Fair.
She was the cook for the Alpha-Gamma-Sigma and Alpha-Gamma-Rho Fraternities at Western Illinois University. She was the Eldorado Township Clerk for over 20 years and was a member of Vermont Christian Church. She was a 4-H leader for years.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vermont Christian Church with Pastor Cody Stinnett officiating.
The PEO Sisterhood will hold a ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall of the church beginning at 10 a.m. Inurnment will be held in the Vermont Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.
