He was born Dec. 20, 1949, in Macomb, a son of John Wade and Patricia J. Johnson Nelson.
Surviving are his mother, Patricia Nelson of Vermont; one brother, Edward Nelson of Glasford; one sister, Maryann (and Bill) Swain of Reidsville, Ga.; four nieces and nephews, Joel Nelson, John (and Samantha) Nelson, Matthew (and Katherine) Swain and Mindy (and Josh) Griffis; and nine great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, John.
He worked as a Groundskeeper for the University of Illinois Athletic Department.
He was a member of the Vermont Masonic Lodge.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Cody Stinnett officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
