John NelsonJohn W. Nelson, 86, of Vermont died at 2:50 a.m. Oct. 29, 2010, at The Elms in Macomb.

He was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Eldorado Township, McDonough County, a son of Ralph and Ara Campbell Nelson. He married Patricia Johnson on Jan. 5, 1947, in Macomb. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Edward (and Jody) Nelson of East Peoria and Kent Nelson of St. Joseph; one daughter, Maryann (and Bill) Swain of Reidsville, Ga.; one sister, Jean (and Frank) Stockham of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one infant brother.

He was an Army Sergeant serving from March 1945 to October 1946.

He was a farmer. He also worked for Bader and Company in Vermont.

He was a member of Vermont Christian Church, Fulton County Farm Bureau, Kiwanis Club in Vermont, Carroll Rankin American Legion Post #26 of Vermont for 60 years and was a 4-H leader for over 20 years.

Services were held Monday at his church with Tim Gilliland and Dave Vandeman officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment was held in Vermont Cemetery with military rites provided by Carroll Rankin American Legion Post #26 of Vermont.

Memorials may be made to Vermont Christian Church or Carroll Rankin American Legion Post #26 of Vermont.
