Loyd McCombsLoyd “Bully” Henry McCombs, 84, of Astoria died at 5:42 p.m. March 25, 2022, at his home.

He was born Sept. 11, 1937, in Bader, a son of Henry and Bonnie Edwards McCombs. He married Linda Mae Orwig on April 23, 1966, in Astoria. She preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 2002.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Patrick McCombs; and three sisters, Janie Danner, Judy Wright and Nancy Westlake.

Surviving are two brothers, Tony (and Vicky) McCombs of Rushville and Ted Bair of Harriman, Tenn.; one sister, Susie Bair of Canton; several nieces and nephews; and his caretakers, Stacey (and Von) Geisendorfer of Baylis, Angela Smith, Matthew Palmer and Ray Palmer, all of Astoria, and Leslie Palmer of Galesburg.

He was an Army veteran, serving from 1960-66 with a rank of SP-4 (T).

He worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company in East Peoria.

He was a member of the UAW Local 974 of East Peoria, the Vermont Masonic Lodge, the Springfield ANSAR Shrine and the Astoria American Legion Post #25.

He was the unofficial assistant coach for Astoria and South Fulton sports for most of his lifetime.

Services will be held at noon Wednesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Masonic services will be provided by the Vermont Masonic Lodge and military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Astoria American Legion Post #25. Pastor Matthew Thiner will officiate with burial in the Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials in Bully’s memory may be made to the South Fulton Athletics program.
