Helen McCurdyHelen L. McCurdy, 89, of Vermont died at 6:08 p.m. Nov. 2, 2020, at Unity Point Methodist in Peoria.

She was born Feb. 28, 1931, in Center Point, Iowa, a daughter of William “Chub” and Helen Irene Lamprell Wheeler. She married Harold McCurdy on Sept. 2, 1951, in Vermont. He preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 2020.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Dale McCurdy; two brothers, Dale and Elzo; three sisters, Velma, Florence and Bertha; Aunt Lena and Uncle Jerry Sears and cousins, Blanche and Dorothy Sears, who all helped raise her after the death of her mother at a very young age; and one great-grandson, Knox Davis Kendrick.

Surviving are one son, David (and Kathy) McCurdy of Vermont; one daughter, Barbara (and Danny) Kendrick of Vermont; one daughter-in-law, Rose McCurdy of Vermont; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She first worked in the office for Bader and Company. She later was the assistant librarian at VIT High School for several years. During the summer months, herself and a bus driver would take what was called the Book Mobile around the school district for children in the country areas.

She played the piano and organ at Vermont Methodist Church for 30-plus years. She also was a den mother for the local Boy Scout troop for several years.

Graveside services were held Saturday at Vermont Cemetery with Reverend Robert Greene officiating. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
