Aged Vermont Man Dies

John V. Mercer, 93, Vermont’s oldest resident, died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday at his home. He suffered a stroke during the night.

Sixteen years ago, Mr. Mercer retired and moved from his farm to town. Mr. Mercer held the lease for the “Q” lake, near Vermont, which was built on his farm. He came to Vermont from the east when he was 4 years old with his parents.

Mr. Mercer was born Sept. 28, 1850, in Ohio, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Mercer. He first married Sally Stafford, who preceded him in death as well as a son, Clair. Later he was married to Effie Danner, of Astoria, who survives.

Other survivors are seven children, Mary and Blanche, Robert and Charles, all of Vermont, Ross of Spokane, Wash., Willie of California, and Mrs. Ada Morrison of Los Angeles, Calif., eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
