James C. “J.C.” Hamm, 77, of Bluff City died at 7:34 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at Anderson Lake Conservation Area near Bluff City.

He was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Sheldons Grove, a son of Pete and Maye Curless Hamm. He married Mary Elizabeth Gruber on Oct. 7, 1939, in Palmyra, Mo. She died Oct. 23, 1987, in Springfield. Two brothers also preceded him in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Poppenhager of Astoria and Shirley Tigar of Browning; two sisters, Wanda Miller of Astoria and Glenna Hursh of Havana; three brothers, Dale Hamm of Bath, Virgil Hamm of Quincy and Pete Hamm Jr. of Browning; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was a retired carpenter and member of Carpenters Local 183 in East Peoria. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

Services were held this morning at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Collis Trone officiating. Burial was in Sheldons Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hickory-Kerton Fire Department in Bluff City or a hospice program of the donor’s choice.
