VeteranHerbert Howe Dies Friday

Herbert H. Howe, 57, of rural Astoria, was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. Friday, Mar. 4, 1988, in Mason District Hospital in Havana from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

He was born May 3, 1930, at Astoria, a son of Thomas and Grace Long Howe. He married LaVern Workman on May 16, 1951, in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Judith Comerford of Havana and Mrs. Linda Kaufman of Congerville; one son, Thomas of Astoria; nine grandchildren; one brother, Charles of Lewistown; and three sisters, Miss Pierapont Howe and Mrs. Onilee Merrill, both of Astoria, and Mrs. Melva Bucher of Abingdon.

He was preceded in death by a son, a brother and two sisters.

He was a construction worker and also a farmer. A Korean War Navy veteran, he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Astoria Cemetery with Collis Trone officiating. Kost Memorial Home of Vermont was in charge of services.
