MAUDE (HUFF) HUGHES

Mrs. Arch Hughes, Summum, Dies Unexpectedly Sunday

Mrs. Arch Hughes of Summum died Sunday, aged 39 years, 4 months and 14 days. Her passing away was a sudden and unexpected demise to her relatives and many friends.

Maude Huff, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Huff was born near Summum, June 7th 1895. Here she grew to womanhood and on June 25th, 1913 she was married to Arch Hughes and together they established a home in Summum where the remainder of her life was spent. In passing, she leaves a devoted husband with unsurpassed fidelity and two loyal and affectionate daughters, Frances, aged fifteen and Vivian thirteen, beside her aged mother, Mrs. Annie Huff and the following brothers and sisters: Charles and Cleve of near Summum and Edward of Rich Hill, Mo., Stella Thomas of Emporia, Kansas, Gloe Ogden, Foster, Mo. and Allie Shawgo of Astoria.

Those of her immediate family who preceded her in death, were a daughter Mabel stillborn, July 18, 1918, a son, Boyd, a lad of nine who passed away July 9, 1922 and Barbara Joan for whom she paid the supreme sacrifice on October 21, 1934.

Maude was in the highest sense “a keeper at home.” Her family were the pride of her life. For them she lived, served, sacrificed and for them gave the best that her life could offer on the altar of wife and motherhood. Several years ago she united with the Summum Christian church, where she was an ardent worker in the church, Sunday school and Ladies Aid and her passing leaves a vacancy which can scarce be filled.

Through her loving disposition and personal charm, she had drawn to herself innumerable friends who are deeply grieved to say good bye to such a splendid associate.

Write above her grave the story of Mary of old, “She hath done what she could.”

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Christian church, Summum, conducted by Rev. R. D. Freleigh, pastor of the Astoria Christian church. The church was filled to over-flow capacity by friends who came to pay their last respects to one whom they had learned to love and honor. Interment was made in the Summum cemetery.
