Hubert CripeHubert Cripe, 97, of Astoria died at 11:27 a.m. Feb. 20, 2018, at his home.

He was born Oct. 26, 1920, in Bader, a son of Oliver John and Alma Mae Miller Cripe. He married Louisa Jean Vollmer on Dec. 21, 1946, in Bader. She preceded him in death on July 18, 2009.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Morris and Wilmer Cripe.

Surviving are one son, Roy (and Virginia) Cripe of Downers Grove; one daughter, Becky (and Mike) Lightle of Pittsfield; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was manager and salesman at FS in Ipava. He also farmed.

He was an Army veteran, serving from 1943-46 in the 734 Bomb Squadron 453 Bomb Group as a pilot with the rank of Captain. He served as a POW after being shot down on a mission of Germany.

He was a member of Grace Bible Church of Astoria, where he was a Deacon Emeritus, Astoria Lions Club, member and officer of the South Fulton Senior Center in Astoria, the Astoria American Legion Post #25 and the Fulton County Farm Bureau. He was a former member of the Rushville Flying Club and the Camp Emmanuel Camp Board.

Services were held Saturday at his church with Pastor Ben Murray officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery with military rites provided by the Astoria American Legion Post #25. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
