Robert W. Cripe, 82, of Astoria, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born April 28, 1916, in Browning, a son of Oliver and Alma Miller Cripe. He married Maurine Crone on Jan. 9, 1943, in Memphis, Mo. She died Aug. 22, 1982.

Surviving are two sons, Garth of Astoria and Brian of Watseka; three brothers, Wilmer and Hubert, both of Astoria, and Morris of Browning; and five grandchildren.

A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post 25. He was a bulk distributor for Standard Oil Co. for 20 years and then owned Cripe Oil Co. He was city clerk of Astoria for 20 years and chief of the Astoria Fire Department.

He was a member of Astoria United Methodist Church where services were held Saturday. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
