Joseph H. Curless, 69, of Ipava, formerly of Astoria, died at 1:41 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 1994, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 7, 1925, in Astoria, a son of Harley and Josie Horton Curless. He married Doris Moore in 1949. He then married Irene Stambaugh on Nov. 24, 1982, in Summum. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Harley Joe Curless of Astoria; three daughters, Mrs. Norman (Jan) Jones of Ipava, Debbie Starkey of San Francisco and Mrs. Steve (Linda) Chase of Keokuk, Iowa; one stepson, Terry Stambaugh of Orlando, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Robert (Susan) Cameron and Mrs. Timothy (Konny) Hendee, both of Astoria; one foster son, James T. Mummert of Riverside, Calif.; 27 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

He worked for Peabody Coal Co. and Amax Coal Co., retiring in 1985 after 37 years. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Astoria Volunteer Fire Department.

Graveside services were held Sunday at Astoria Cemetery with Collis Trone officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Astoria Lions Club or to the Graham Hospital Hospice in Canton.
