John Baum, 86, Of Astoria, Dies

John Baum Jr.John Baum, 86, well-known retired Astoria area farmer, died at 3:55 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 1980, at Culbertson Hospital in Rushville.

He was born Oct. 20, 1894, at Browning, a son of John and Mary Etta Stambaugh Baum, Sr. On June 28, 1916, he was married to Mary Burgard in Lewistown.

A farmer in this area for many years, he retired in 1960. He was a member of the Astoria Church of the Brethren and Knights of Pythias Lodge. He had been a resident of the Astoria Care Center the past two and one-half years.

Survivors include his wife of Astoria; seven daughters, Gartha Royer of Macomb, Leona Skiles of Astoria, Frances Heller of Moline, Margaret Smice of Muscatine, Iowa, Rosalie Harvey of East Moline, Lola Mae Huff of Coal Valley and Judith Savage of Williamsfield; six sons, Ronald of East Moline, Russell of Indianapolis, Ind., Raymond of Columbia, S.C., Richard of Quincy, John Rodney of Davenport, Iowa, and Robert of Ipava; one sister, Gertrude Sayrs of Rushville; 44 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, seven brothers, one son-in-law and two step-grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon in the Astoria Church of the Brethren with Collis Trone officiating. Burial will be in the Astoria Cemetery.

There will be no formal visitation, but friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Astoria Church of the Brethren.
