HERSCHEL EDWARD BURGARD

Herschel E. Burgard Dies At Age 74

Herschel E. Burgard, 74, Browning, died at 6 a.m. Sunday at St. John’s Hospital Springfield.

He was born Jan. 1, 1898, near Astoria, the son of Pius and Elizabeth (Gruber) Burgard. He married Helen Price Oct. 9, 1920 in Lewistown. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Carmen Burgard of Jacksonville, and Othello Burgard of Browning; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Clayton of Browning; a brother, Galen Burgard of St. Louis; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Hults of Naperville and Mrs. Lulu Baker of Dixon; 12 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

A brother died earlier.

He was a retired farmer, a member of the Schuyler-Brown Service Company and Schuyler County Extension Service boards, a Hickory Township supervisor, a World War I veteran, and a member of the Sheldons Grove United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. James Elder officiating. Burial was in the Sheldons Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Herschel E. Burgard Memorial Fund in care of the Sheldons Grove United Methodist Church.
