Harvey S. Bucher Well Known Astorian, Dies Tuesday

Harvey S. Bucher, 72, lifetime Astoria resident, died Tuesday at 10:18 p.m. in Mason District hospital, where he had been a patient since March.

A son of Cyrus and Leah Gibble Bucher, he was born April 2, 1889 in Woodland township. On Nov. 25, 1908 he married Stella McCormick, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Christine Danner, Astoria; two sons, Bernard of Macomb, and Hobart, Farmington; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren; three sisters, Annie Blickenstaff, Fannie Stambaugh, and Lizzie Lam, all of Astoria; one brother, Ezra, Phoenix, Ariz., and a half-sister, Mary Wickert, Astoria. He was preceded in death by four sisters, four brothers and a granddaughter.

A civic-minded Astorian, he owned and operated the Astoria Telephone Exchange from 1913-1924, when he sold his interest to Earl Yocum. In 1919 he purchased an interest in Danner & Lerew, now the Astoria Sunshine Stores, where he remained until 1948, when he dissolved his partnership with Henry Lehman.

Serving as Mayor of Astoria, 1941-1949, he aided in organizing the Astoria Community Exchange, Astoria Library, and the Farmers State Bank of Astoria. A past member of the Astoria Board of Education, he was a member of Astoria Masonic Lodge No. 100, Kiwanis Club and the Astoria Community Club.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Astoria Christian church, of which he was a member, by the Rev. Joseph Gift, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Forrest Wise, pastor of the Ipava Christian church. Entombment will be in Astoria Memorial Mausoleum.

The family will meet with friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Shawgo Memorial Home, who will be in charge of funeral arrangements.
