James AbernathyJames Leslie Abernathy, 86, of Vermont died at 9:25 a.m. Oct. 21, 2006, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born July 31, 1920, in Table Grove, the son of Ezra Leslie and Elsie Ruth Notson Abernathy. He married Nora Easley on April 13, 1946, in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, David Allen and James L. II (and Pat), both of Vermont; four daughters, Betty Jane (and Richard) Brumbaugh of Lincoln, Mo., Julia Cleavinger of Macomb, Judy (and Gary) Kinney of Lakewood, Colo., and Mary Lou (and Buddy) Hultz of Payson; one sister, Shirley Kessler of Table Grove; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Brooks, Virginia Carlson and Helen (last name unknown)*.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a 60-year member of Vermont American Legion Post #26.

He worked for Table Grove Grain Elevator, was a mechanic and bus driver for VIT School District, and a mechanic at Bader and Co. in Vermont before retiring.

Cremation has been accorded. There will be no visitation or services. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
