Aged Astoria Woman Dies

Mrs. Alice Welker Passes Away Following An Operation

Mrs. Alice Welker, a life long resident of Fulton county died Sunday in the hospital at Canton, following an operation. She had only been ill about two weeks. She had undergone an emergency major operation on Tuesday of last week. At the time of her death she was aged 83 years, 6 months and 11 days.

Alice Farwell Welker, daughter of John and Julia Blandin Farwell, was born March 18, 1857, near Bluff City, Ill. She grew to womanhood on the old homestead where she was born.

On May 13, 1883 she was married to George Welker. To this union five children were born. Her husband preceded her in death about 42 years ago. One daughter, Mrs. Marnie Maxwell, also preceded her in death on June 17, 1928. She was the last of a family of six.

Perhaps it was about forty years ago that she accepted Christ and united with the Primitive Baptist church at Summum. Exact records of her church relationship are not available. After moving to Astoria about 1917, she attended the United Brethren church and the Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by four children, three sons, Harley, John and Jesse, all of Astoria, and one daughter, Mrs. Maude Wilson of Peoria, 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the United Brethren church, Rev. Lester Fike officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery.
