JOHN FARWELL

John Farwell.

John Farwell, aged 93 years, 3 months and 10 days, died at his home in Woodland township, Tuesday evening of this week.

Mr. Farwell was born in the state of New Hampshire, June 15, 1807. When 21 years of age he directed his footsteps to the state of Mass. In the year 1837 he came by the way of the canal and Illinois river and landed at Sharp's Landing. He first settled near Bernadotte, remaining there two years. He then moved to Woodland where he resided until his death.

In 1841 he was united in marriage to Miss Calista Curless, by whom he had one child, William. His first wife died in June 1843. November 1844 he married Susan Severns who did not long survive. October 24, 1849, Mr. Farwell was married to Mrs. Julia Blanders. To this union five children were born. The following four are living: Mrs. James Chaddock, Mrs. Welker, Granville and Mrs. John Curless.

Mr. Farwell was in many respects a wonderful man. Without an education, he accumulated an immense fortune and was possessed of great business ability. He came to Illinois a poor man, but by hard work and thrift, made money. He was honest in all his dealings and was ever ready to assist his neighbors. Those who knew him best were his friends, and his death removes a good citizen from Woodland township. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from his late home and the remains were laid to rest in the Sixteen cemetery.
