MAUDE CORNELA (WELKER) WILSON

Former Astoria Woman Found Hanging Outside Of Her House In Peoria

Mrs. Maud C. Wilson Commits Suicide; Funeral Held Here Yesterday

The body of Mrs. Maude Cornela Wilson of Peoria, a former Astoria resident, was discovered Sunday morning at about 7 o’clock, hanging suspended by a rope above the back porch of her home in that city at 318 Thrush Avenue, by a nearby neighbor, Paul Sheely, as he was backing his car out of the garage, preparatory to leaving on a hunting trip.

Mrs. Wilson apparently had stepped from her second floor bedroom window to the flat roof of the porch and then climbed upon a stool to place the clothesline about the vent pipe in the roof of the house, later stepping off the stool.

Mrs. Wilson, living with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Decker, was seen alive at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, at which time she had retired for the night. She had been in ill health for sometime, having recently undergone an operation for a brain tumor, it is said. The body was brought to Astoria Monday about noon to the Cline Horton funeral home where preparations were made for burial.

Mrs. Wilson was born near Summum in Woodland township, Jan. 20, 1896, a daughter of George R. and Alice Farwell-Welker. She has been a member of the Evangelical United Brethren church for the past 25 years.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Ketra Decker of Peoria, one son, Larry Wilson of Astoria, two grandsons, three brothers, Harley Welker, John Welker and Jesse Welker, all of Astoria.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the E. U. B. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. A. Edwards. Burial was made in the Mt. Zion cemetery east of Astoria.
