VeteranOrval Umphryes Dies In Hospital

Orval E. Umphryes, 77, of Vermont, formerly of Rushville, died at 1:25 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 1990, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born May 16, 1912, in Rushville, a son of Grover and Minnie Thompson Umphryes. He married Imogene Spring on Aug. 31, 1940, in Lewistown. She died Feb. 27, 1985.

He also was preceded in death by two sons, Neil and Orval Jr., and four brothers.

Surviving are four sons, George of Adair, Richard, Jon Paul and Henry, all of Vermont; seven daughters, Patsy Spring of Vermont, Lona Krohe of Arenzville, Rosie Wece of Murphysboro, Susan Noel of Pontiac, Nancy Kinne of Vermont, Betsy Umphryes of Centralia and Donna Black of Camden; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Everett of Rushville, Grover Jr. of San Pierre, Ind., and Edgar Burton of Griffith, Ind.; and four sisters, Margaret Irwin of Rushville, Helen Davis of Canton, Irene Brubeck of Tremont and Patsy Laviolette of Griffith.

He farmed all of his life and worked for the city of Rushville Street Dept. for 10 years, retiring in 1976. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. C. E. Malone officiating. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery northeast of Rushville. Military services were held at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Friday evening.

Memorials may be made to the Vermont Rescue Squad or a charity of the donor’s choice.
