Astoria Rural Mail Carrier Found Dead Sunday Morning

Jesse Utsinger Carrier On Rural Route Two; Funeral Held Yesterday

This community was terribly shocked Sunday morning, when the news spread that Jesse W. Utsinger, rural carrier on Route Two out of Astoria was found dead in bed at his home in the south part of town by his family.

From all indications he passed away while asleep sometime during the night. He was aged 59 years, 7 months and 20 days.

Mr. Utsinger, while able to carry on his work as rural carrier, had been poorly for several years, suffering from diabetes, and had been under a physician’s care.

He had served as rural carrier out of Astoria for 26 years. His patrons have only the highest praise for his services. He was trustworthy, congenial and accommodating under all conditions in carrying on his work.

Mr. Utsinger was born Jan. 17, 1888 in Deerfield township, a son of John W. and Mary (Ault) Utsinger. He married Fannie Loucht, who survives.

Other survivors are eight daughters, Mrs. Rosa Mae Pollitt, Mrs. Gertrude Cable, Mrs. Loretta Fisk, and Miss Dorcas Utsinger, Astoria; Mrs. Marjibelle A’Hearn, Ellisville; Mrs. Idella Gaffney, Pittsfield; Mrs. Hazel Everett and Miss Shirley Utsinger, Peoria; six grandchildren; five brothers, Charles Utsinger, of Ellisville; Francis Utsinger of Avon; Carl Utsinger, Prairie City; Lee Utsinger, Ellisville; Earl Utsinger, Fairview; and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Myers and Mrs. Rilla Howerter, Rapatee and Mrs. Pearl Mahr, Ellisville.

Mr. Utsinger was a member of the K. of P. lodge in Astoria.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Evangelical United Brethren church by Dr. C. W. Perkins of Paris, assisted by the Rev. H. A. Edwards, pastor. After the services the group proceeded to the Wiley church were short services were held. Interment was in the Wiley cemetery.
