Virgil A. "Shorty" Skiles, 86, of rural Browning died at 1:35 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Browning Township, Schuyler County, a son of William Henry and Elsie Ellen Belville Skiles.

Surviving is one sister, Rosella (and Paul) Piper of Monmouth.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Olive Baker and Helen Skiles; and one brother, Harvey Skiles.

He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a farmer. He attended Ridgeville Church, then Bader Christian Church.

Services were held Monday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Shane Baker officiating. Burial was in Ridgeville Cemetery, where military rites were conducted by Astoria American Legion Post 25.
