Eldon ScrogumEldon L. Scrogum, 84, of Springfield, formerly of Astoria, died at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Pleasant Hill Village in Girard.

He was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Woodland Township, Fulton County, a son of Everett D. and Bessie Mae Lybarger Scrogum. He married Rosalie Bucy on Jan. 28, 1942, in Hannibal, Mo. He later married Mary Lou Walters on Feb. 28, 1960, in Springfield. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Terry of Springfield; and several cousins.

A member of Astoria American Legion Post 25 for more than 50 years, he was a World War II Army veteran with rank of sergeant, serving with Company C of the 703rd Military Police Battalion in North Africa and Italy.

He farmed and was a cabinet maker in the Astoria area. He also worked for the State of Illinois and retired from the Department of State Police in 1984.

He was member of First United Methodist Church in Springfield.

Services were held Friday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. Howard Shockey officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery, where military rites were accorded by American Legion Post 25.
